On Andrée, Nils and Knut's journey, everything went wrong from the begining.

Their goal was to cross the North Pole in a balloon designed for the expedition. After four days of trying to stay aloft, crashing into the sea, and having lost most of its ballast, the frozen balloon landed on an ice floe in the middle of the Arctic Sea. For the next three months, they tried to drift across the ice, dragging a boat, sledges and hundreds of items unusable for an ice expedition. They were unprepared for a crossing on foot. The drifting ice sent them towards the island of Kvitøya. 30 years later, their remains were found, along with diaries and several rolls of film. 

Shortly after arriving on the island, Andrée wrote in her diary: "With companions like these, one could manage in almost any situation”. From this sentence, I created this scene of the three of them. Nils and Knut watch each other's backs as they hear bears approaching through the fog, while Andrée scans the horizon with her spyglass trying to find their way.

This sculpture is made with wire, clay and paper and painted with watercolour, pencil and acrylic.

"Con compañeros como éstos, uno puede arreglárselas en casi cualquier situación". 

En el viaje de Andrée, Nils y Knut, todo salió mal desde el principio. Su objetivo era cruzar el Polo Norte en un globo diseñado para la expedición. Tras cuatro días intentando mantenerse en el aire, chocar contra el mar y perder casi todo el lastre, el globo helado aterrizó en un témpano de hielo en medio del mar Ártico. Durante los tres meses siguientes intentaron seguir adelante a través del hielo, arrastrando un bote, un trineo y miles de objetos inservibles para una expedición a pie. El hielo a la deriva les envió hacia la isla de Kvitøya. 30 años después, encontraron sus restos, junto a varios diarios y rollos de película.

Poco después de llegar a la isla, Andrée escribió en su diario: "Con compañeros como éstos, uno puede arreglárselas en casi cualquier situación". A partir de esta frase, creé esta escena de los tres. Nils y Knut se cubren las espaldas mientras escuchan osos acercarse a través de la niebla. Andrée otea el horizonte con su catalejo tratando de encontrar el camino.
