Between the end of 19th century and the 1920s, 8 countries carried out around 16 scientific and geographical expeditions.

Known as the Heroic era of Antarctic exploration due to the difficulties faced by the explorers, there were relatively few technological advances and the conditions under which they undertook their journeys were very precarious. 

During his lifetime, Amundsen, managed to cross the Northeast Passage in a sailboat, reach the South Pole and fly over the North Pole on board the airship, Norge, together with the Italian engineer, Umberto Nobile. In addition to political and scientific purposes, what the explorers desired was to be the first to go where no one else had gone before.
Apart from having luck and excellent preparation, Amundsen may have survived all his journeys because he accepted when to abort and turn around.

However, Amundsen and Nobile stopped speaking to each other after arguing about who was the first to fly over the North Pole. Even so, Amundsen was the first volunteer to try to rescue Nobile when he got lost in another expedition. Sadly, Amundsen never returned although Nobile was rescued some time later.

Esta época fue conocida como la época heroica de la exploración Antártica, por las dificultades que pasaron los exploradores, ya que los avances tecnológicos eran aún escasos y las condiciones en las que emprendían los viajes fueron muy precarias. 

A lo largo de su vida, Amundsen, consiguió atravesar el Paso del Noroeste en un velero, alcanzar el polo Sur y sobrevolar el Polo Norte a bordo del dirigible Norge junto al ingeniero italiano Umberto Nobile. Además de fines científicos y políticos, los exploradores buscaban ser los primeros en llegar a lugares donde nadie más había llegado. Aunque para ello, arriesgaran su vida en condiciones extremas. 

Además de suerte y preparación, quizás Amundsen sobrevivió a todos sus viajes porque sabía cuando había que darse la vuelta si la cosa se ponía fea. 

Amundsen y Nobile no volvieron hablar después de discutir sobre quién de los dos fue el primero en sobrevolar el Polo Norte. Aún así, Amundsen fue voluntario a rescatar a Nobile en una avioneta cuando este se perdió en otra expedición.

Amundsen nunca regresó y Nobile fue rescatado tiempo después.
